On Monday, January 27, 1975, the new University Library building officially opened. At the end of the Fall 1974 semester, a crew of librarians, staff, administrators, and student assistants packed the library’s entire collection of books and materials in preparation for the move from the old library building (now Lassen Hall) into, “…the largest building on campus, providing 210,000 square feet of floor space in a six-story structure.”
During planning for the new library building, anticipating continued student population growth, a second building half was planned. Although it was projected to be built soon after the new library, construction on Library II did not begin until the 1980s. The second half (now known as Library South) was opened in Summer 1990.
The University Library is celebrating our 50th year at the center of campus with exhibits on both the 1st and 2nd Floors. These pieces of Hornet History will be on display throughout the Spring 2025 semester.
