A collection of 37 issues of The Liberator newspaper has been donated to the Sac State University Library by Elizabeth Shattuck. This gift illuminates the importance of private donors in building the university’s research holdings and teaching collections.
The Liberator was a leading Abolitionist newspaper published in Boston by William Lloyd Garrison from 1831 to 1865, the end of the Civil War. Our 37 issues are all from the year 1855. While a full run of The Liberator is available online, there is nothing like the experience of handling and reading such an important and historic primary resource.
Our paper copies of The Liberator have been cataloged and can be found in OneSearch. Our issues will be available for in-person research in the Donald & Beverly Gerth Special Collections & University Archives. We are thankful for Elizabeth Shattuck’s generous support of the University Library.
