The Sacramento State University Library is proud to celebrate freedom, resilience, and knowledge this Banned Books Week (Oct. 4-10) as it is one of 23 California State University Libraries committed to upholding the right to read. This year we highlight the 2026 theme, “Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read,” as the campus library invites you to explore the importance of the right to read.
In 2025, 4,235 unique titles were targeted for censorship to silence and exclude authors' voices, restrict access to knowledge, and challenge our essential freedom to read. These written works often include the stories or work of the LGBTQIA+ community and people of color to regulate what stories can be told. We honor our academic freedom which empowers us to explore diverse ideas and open discourse without the fear of censorship.
This Banned Books Week join us at the University Library for several offerings including:
- Picking up a free Banned Books Week poster from the User Services desk
- Browsing our online collection of banned books, which are available for checkout
- Following us on Instagram, Facebook, or Bluesky for showcased posts on banned books.
We invite you to celebrate Banned Books Week as your participation helps protect one of our essential freedoms!
