Sokiku Nakatani Tea Room and Garden

Background Information

Welcome to the website for the Sokiku Nakatani Tea Room and Garden at California State University, Sacramento. The Tea Room and Garden was named in memory of Sokiku Nakatani [1903-1990], a long time resident of Sacramento and Los Angeles and a dedicated student and teacher of Chado (The Way of Tea). The tea room and garden serves as a legacy to her life-long appreciation of Japanese aesthetics and culture.

The Tea Room and Garden, located in the University Library, was dedicated on June 2, 2007. Through an active outreach program to the university campus and the community at large, the tea room and garden serves as a unique venue for the teaching and practice of the Japanese Way of Tea, as well as a center for cultural activities related to the arts of Japan. Please see links for upcoming tours of the Sokiku Nakatani Tea Room and Garden and programs in the Tea Room.

The gift to the University in 2005 includes Japanese teaware and related artifacts, some of which are shown in the virtual exhibit available from this website.
