The University Library is pleased to welcome our third Library Research Fellow of the 2018-2019 academic year to campus. A doctoral candidate in museum studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki School of Architecture, Ms. Angeliki Tsiotinou is currently conducting dissertation research, including fieldwork in several Greek American and other ethnic or migration-specific U.S.-based museums, to examine the poetics and the politics of exhibiting the Greek American experience. By providing the background to such practices, the ideas they embody and the challenges they set, her dissertation questions the meanings the museums convey through exhibiting the past (the poetics) as well as their role in the making of Greek America’s history, memory and culture (the politics). She is drawing on the extensive Greek American holdings of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic collection in support of her research, to understand the historical and ideological context of ‘ethnic revival’ within which the Greek American museums as well as the broader ‘ethnic heritage preservation movement’ emerged and proliferated in US public culture. Her research in the collection focuses mostly on Greek American periodicals (newspapers, journals, magazines) produced from the 1970s and onwards. Ms. Tsiotinou is in residence from Oct. 22-Nov. 30, 2018 and will disseminate the progress of her research before leaving campus. The Library Research Fellowship Program is generously funded by grants from the Elios Charitable Foundation and the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Foundation.”
