The Friends of the Library invites you to join us for a presentation by Terri A. Castaneda, author of Marie Mason Potts: The Lettered Life of a California Indian Activist. Castaneda’s book explores the life, challenges, and accomplishments of Marie Mason Potts (1895–1978), a Mountain Maidu woman and one of the most influential California Indian political activists of the 20th century. Castaneda draws on Potts’s work for the Federated Indians of California, the Smoke Signal newspaper, and personal correspondence to privilege Potts’s voice in this exceptional biography.
Potts's long affiliation with Sacramento State began in the early 1950s, while we were temporarily headquartered on the campus of Sacramento Junior College, and continued through the 1970s, when she taught California Indian basketweaving courses in the nascent Ethnic Studies Program.
