Femicides: Shattering the Silence of Violence Against Women
Curated by Dr. Diego Bonilla (Communications), Dr. Brenda Romero (World Languages and Literatures), and Dr. Maria Vargas (Ethnic Studies).
This exhibit brings awareness to the urgent topic of violence against women in Latin America through different lenses. In addition to providing recent statistics and drawing attention to specific cases from Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil, we highlight contemporary books that introduce readers to the lived experiences of women affected by violence. These texts, fiction and nonfiction, illuminate the intersecting forms of oppression that exacerbate gender violence and act as a catalyst for advocacy. The central piece of this exhibit is Requiem Diurnus, a digital art project that uses artificial intelligence to acknowledge and mourn the victims of femicides worldwide. The exhibit features a dynamic projection of randomly selected images showcasing hyper-realistic "found object sculptures" created from news articles about femicide events.
