About the Collection

Comprising the holdings of the former Speros Basil Vryonis Center for the Study of Hellenism, this Collection, currently numbering some 75,000 volumes, was donated to Sacramento State in December 2002 and named in honor of its benefactor and alumnus Angelo Tsakopoulos. The Vryonis Center was initially established in Los Angeles in 1985 by Dr. Speros Vryonis, Jr., a scholar of Byzantine and Ottoman Studies, in memory of his late son Speros Basil. This early collection formed the core of the Vryonis Center Collection that would in 1989 come to reside in Rancho Cordova, California. There the Collection was further enhanced under successive directors until its transfer to Sacramento State.

Since its opening in the University Library, the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection has been admirably fulfilling its new purpose as a valuable resource supporting the curricular and research needs of the campus, the Sacramento region, and the broader scholarly community, especially as the anchor of the Hellenic Studies Program. The Hellenic Studies Program is administered by the History Department and currently offers an academic minor.
