NSM 21 Midterm Questi= on and Results

 

To further assess wha= t the students retained from their exercise on plagiarism, I have done two things.  One of them is to mon= itor students’ written reflections on readings in the freshman seminar tex= t, Foundations…  Twenty-two out of 25 students rout= inely cite the passages that they paraphrase or quote in their answers.  The few students who neglect to do= so were absent on the day of the activity; I had to tell them that they could avoid the one-point deduction on each of their assignments by properly citi= ng their source of information.  = Not all of the citations are done correctly in APA style (author’s last n= ame, year, page) but I have not been deducting points= for (last name and page).

 

My second assessment = tool was the following question on the midterm.

Thirteen out of 25 st= udents answered correctly that the version was a summary; 8 said it was a paraphra= se; 4 said it was original.

 

Ten out of 25 student= s wrote the APA citation perfectly; 12 either left out t= he year, scrambled the sequence of information, or used the book’s edito= rs as the author.
