Be prepared to apply what you learned about plagiarism.

ú Be prepared= to discuss the article “Ideas as Property” (pp. 224-229) in class on M= onday.

ú Read “Decoding Your Professors” (pp.122-131).

Write a list of 5 questions you will ask one of your professors (not Dr. Paradis) when you interview her or him next week. You may follow the Suggested Activ= ities at the end of the article, but be sure to ask questions that will really he= lp you to get to know your professor as a person.

Some time before next Friday, October 6, make an appointment with your professor, conduct your interview, and submit a written report on what you did and what you found out about your professor.

September 25, 2006: Examples of a passa= ge from the student reader and different versions of student work were present= ed to see if students could identify plagiarism. Examples were from the LibraryR= 17;s website; I rearranged the material slightly so that students would not see = the answers from the outset, but had to make their own evaluation first.

NSM 21: Avoiding Plagiarism Practice<= /o:p>

Up until now I have g= raded your written assignments, focusing more on the effort and content reflected= in your writing; I have not been strict in enforcing proper citation of others’ intellectual property. As you should know from your reading, acknowledging your use of ideas expressed first by others is legally and ethically required. After some practice I know that yo= u will become proficient in citation. The following exercise is meant to start you on that practice.

The back side of this= sheet reminds you of the definitions of summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting, w= hich you should have learned from the on-line tutorial. You should also remember that information that you summarize, paraphrase, and/or quote should be cited in= parentheses immediately following that information.

ú Review your written answers to the questions assigned for your reading of “Ideas = as Property.”

ú Draw a box = around any sentences, clause, or phrase that is a summary, paraphrase, or quote; l= abel the box indicating whether it is a summary, paraphrase, or quote.

ú Make sure t= hat quoted text is in quotation marks.

ú Write proper citations after each boxed item. Write a full citation (citing your text) at the end. You may use a separate sheet of pa= per for the citations, if you want.

Since most of you are pursuing careers in science or technology, please practice using the citation style of the American Psychology Association (APA). Some helpful specifics are

üFor citing = within the body of your written piece:

(authors’ last name, date of publication, page nu= mber)

üFor a full citation at the end of your written piece:

· Referencing books:

Author’s last name, fi= rst initial. (date) Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher.

· Referencing articles in a journal:

Article’s author [last name, first initial] (date) Article Title. Journal Title, Volume, pages on which the whole article is found.

· Referencing articles in a book (like your reader):

Article’s author [last name, first initial] (date) Article Title, in Book’= ;s editor [last name first initial,] (editor). Book Title. (Pages) Place of publication: Publisher.

Other instructors may= ask you to use other citation styles. All of the different styles will require basic information that would allow som= eone to find and/or evaluate your source of information, including: authors, dates, titles, publishers, volumes, page numbers. For future written re= sponses to articles in your reader, I want you to cite within the body of your writ= ing, but will understand that the full citation will just be the text. So you need not write the full cit= ation of the text again.

Do not use quotations= from the essay; use your own words. Write in clear, direct sentences. T= ype or neatly handwrite your answers. Your answers will be graded holistically, according to the following rubric.
