Print Collections Introduction

CSUS Special Collections & Archives - Print Collections

Print Collections

The department's holdings of printed books cover a broad range of topics in history, literature, art, and science that supplement the archival research collections. The primary focus of the printed book collection is California history including the history of Sacramento and the Central Valley, the history of ethnic communities, and the political and cultural movements of the second half of the 20th century.

Bound printed books from the rare Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection.

The Department has a small collection of rare books and illuminated manuscripts (ca. 12th-19th century), early print specimen pages, and imprints from early publishers and printers, including the Aldine Press, Plantin, and other early European presses. The collection also has holdings related to modern presses such as Kelmscott, Doves, and Ashendene as well as those representing the fine print tradition in California and the San Francisco Bay Area. There are also broadsides, ephemera, and general writings on the history of typography.
